Award winning architect, Gillian Holl is a mother and wife, and the founder and principal of Veld Architects, an award-winning architecture studio based in North West, just a 30 minutes’ drive outside Johannesburg. Gillian Holl places emphasis on the value of optimum design integrated with nature and the beauty of sustainable living. She is passionate about detailing and manufacturing furnishings to complete the vision of the house from start to finish. Although Gillian is a strong follower of form, she remains true to the functional aspects of the house.
Featured Project – House with a view
House with a view is a living breathing symbiotic building that evokes its inhabitants with feelings of contentment in space and place. From the eco pool to the herb garden, nature is encouraged to flourish. The kitchen forms the pivotal point of the design, whether hosting a gathering or a small intimate family dinner, it serves in functionality in addition to being an aesthetic masterpiece in the main living area. This area has large openable stacking doors that create a gallery framed view of the mountain ranges in the distance and connects the users with nature. This home and office is the epitome of what the Veld Lifestyle is all about.
Samantha Loubser is a young dynamic architect and founder of Strut Architects. Her passion is personalised design solutions for major house renovations, new build residential, small scale commercial and heritage renovation projects. Through her focus on personalised renovation solutions, she has had the opportunity to create interiors that are an extension of the homeowner’s personalities, more often, bringing their fantasies to life. After all, your home, is the only place where you can truly be yourself.
Featured project – Buckingham
The kitchen and living area were the main design feature of this house renovation. The renovation had its fair share of challenges that needed to be addressed. Firstly, the front face of the house needed to be redesigned to enable the client to navigate visitors to the front door located on the north elevation of the house. The west elevation/ garden view of the house was amazing, but the house had little exposure to this. Subsequently Samantha opened the kitchen and living area up to this view of the garden. This project was successfully completed in November 2019.
